You know they say you should have a happy place. A place where you can go to when you close your eyes to make things alright? This might just be my happy place.
Right in the middle of Skiathos’ old port and new port is a little peninsula which used to have a fort on it to protect the town.
Now Bourtzi is brimming with fresh pine trees, and the turquoise water laps at its edges. It is home to a museum and a cafe.
But you’ve not come for the cafe, or the museum. Walk straight past those until you come to a little stone staircase. Carefully descend, and the noise of people chatting whilst they sip their lattes will float away and will be replaced with the gentle lapping of waves on rocks, and the odd boat going passed.
This tiny little rocky outcrop feels a world away from the bustling streets. The sun beams down, warming the rocks and the few lucky people who have found themselves there.
The sea is clear and as blue as blue can be and just begs you to leap into it from the very nicely placed diving board.
Even the toilets have an amazing view whilst you wash your hands.
Promise me if you ever find yourself in Skiathos, you’ll take yourself here for an afternoon armed with a towel, sunscreen and a good book. Jump off that diving board and dry off watching the world go by. You won’t regret it.
Do you have a happy place?
