I haven’t shared any skincare posts for a while so I thought I would update you with my current skincare routine and my favourite products.
I have always struggled a little with my skin, suffering from sensitivity and acne throughout my life but this routine and these products have really helped me keep my skin consistent and at its best. Many of them I have now used for years and have no plans on changing. The products I mention here would pretty much suit every skin type as they are gentle, effective and help give a lovely, healthy glow.
If you are not into skin care or are a ‘use a wipe or leave my make up on’ kind of person then this routine is going to absolutely baffle you! It also probably isn’t for you if you don’t want to spend on your skin as this can get expensive, but in my opinion if you value your face, you should take your skincare seriously.
Morning skincare routine
I start every morning by cleansing my face using Ren’s Clear Calm Clarifying Clay Cleanser. I know it is a mouthful but it is a really lovely product. It is gentle for sensitive skins, doesn’t dry skin (NEVER use a foaming face wash even if you have oily skin) and is effective on problem skins. It doesn’t have any nasties in it, and it is great value. I am a big fan of Ren in fact and I am yet to come across a product of theirs that I don’t like.
Next I use Pixi Glow Tonic by simply saturating a cotton pad and sweeping it gently all over my face. It is an acid exfoliator, which if you are new to acids, don’t be afraid. It is really gentle and removes any dead and dull skin cells without irritation, leaving your skin refreshed and glowing.
Once my face has dried, I use a few drops of Ole Henricksen Truth Serum Collagen Booster. This is full of vitamin c, smells delicious and helps keep your skin looking glowy and young. This is a cult product that so many people rave about and I am definitely in that tribe. This is not cheap, but it is worth it and will be in my skincare arsenal for years to come.
And finally, I moisturise with Kate Somerville’s Goat Milk. This was a game changer for me as it helps to alleviate my sensitive skin, keep it moisturised and doesn’t give me spots – I combination which I haven’t been able to find in any other moisturiser. I can’t recommend this cream enough to everyone with all different skin types, it is honestly brilliant.
The only downfall is that it is not stocked in the UK and shipping it in from America isn’t exactly on the cheap side. However, I have been using this for years now and never once considered switching. I get my fix by begging friends, family, colleagues, neighbours etc who are visiting the US to bring me some back, and fill in the gaps by shipping it in. I have a trip to New York lined up in a few months so will be taking an extra case to fill up!
Evening skincare routine
Taking off my make-up and the dirt and grime of the day takes a little more effort than my morning routine but it doesn’t take long and I have reaped the benefits of taking that extra care and attention.
Firstly, I start by removing my make up with a balm cleanser and face cloth. My favourite is Clinique’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm which looks a bit like lard but melts once on the skin and dissolves all make up and grime. I just take a small blob and massage it in to my skin all over my face including eyes, and then wipe of with a face cloth that i’ve run under the warm tap and wrung out. This takes pretty much all of my make up off (I don’t wear a lot of eye make up and wear a dissolvable mascara which comes off with warm water) and leaves your skin ready for the next step which is another cleanse.
My second cleanse is with the same Ren cleanser as I use in the mornings. Ensuring all my make up is off before I use this means that the cleanser can get to work on my skin, not on removing my make up. Life-changing realisation right there!
I then acid exfoliate. I found these Cane and Austin Acne Pads after trying out a number of acid exfoliators and saw pretty quick results. Now, I won’t be without them and if I run out I can see the difference in my skin straight away. They help keep any spots away and keep my skin looking bright and glowy. I would recommend these to anyone suffering from spots or acne. Again, these aren’t cheap but you get what you pay for here. As a side note, the pack says to use twice a day – as they are so pricey I only use them in the evening and use the much cheaper Glow Tonic in the mornings and this works brilliantly for my skin and my bank balance.
After that I often but not always use the Ole Henricksen Truth Serum again. It just depends on how I am feeling, what my skin is doing and whether I can be bothered with the extra layer.
The next step is an oil. People with oily and problem skin should definitely NOT look away now as this is just as important for oily skins as it is for dry skins. I alternate between two depending on the weather and my skin’s condition.
For the winter or when my skin is feeling very parched, I use Ole Henricksen Pure Truth Youth Activating Oil. It is 100% rose hip oil and helps hydrate the skin, reduce the signs of ageing and add a lovely glow. I only use a drop or two so this has lasted me for years and that justifies the price.
More often though, I use Ren’s Vita Mineral Omega 3 Optimum Skin Oil which is a bit of a hero product in my eyes. It really helps keep any spots at bay and keeps my skin from looking dry. This is another one that if I run out I really notice a decline in my skin and I wouldn’t want to be without it now. During the winter months I often put a drop of this in to my moisturiser in the morning under my make up which helps stop my skin from drying out and keeps my make up looking fresh.
Finally, I moisturise again using the wonderful Goat Milk.
In addition to my daily routine, I try to use Alpha-H Liquid Gold once a week in the evening which really brightens the skin the next day – on those days I double cleanse as normal, apply this and then skip all my other products to let it get to work on its own.
I am not that great at using masks and one-off treatments, and this is something I want to really try out and give a go over the coming few months so if you have any recommendations please let me know.
