Looking in to other people’s make up bags is almost as exciting as looking in to people’s windows (tell me I’m not alone here) so I thought I would share my 6 favourite make up products that I use on a daily basis and would recommend to anyone. I’m giving you a virtual peek in to my make up bag if you like.
I tend to stick to a very simple natural look that highlights my best features and hides my worst, rather than more of a flamboyant look. I am also a creature of habit and tend to stick to a product if I like it and it works for me so these are all tried and tested over the weeks and months… and if you read my skincare post last week, I have used some of those items for years and I am no different with make up.
My 6 favourite make up products
First up I’ll start with my ‘foundation’ which is actually a BB cream. The website says it is ‘enhancing moisturiser for immediate beauty’ and I have to agree. It is a bit like putting the Snapchat beauty filter on (talking of which, when will that actually be possible in real life?!). It is light enough so it doesn’t sink in to any wrinkles which is a problem us ladies on the wrong side of thirty might suffer from, but it has enough coverage to even out my skin tone and cover any imperfections. I love that it has a high SPF of 30 in it which makes it great for every day use at home, but also means I don’t need to change when I am on holiday.
I heard a horrible rumour from the lady at the Dior counter in John Lewis last month that this is being discontinued. Somebody please tell me otherwise? Or if it is (*sobs*) I am going to need a replacement so suggestions welcome.
I found this at the end of last year and quite honestly it was a revelation. I am rather pale skinned so I like to swish a bit of bronzer over my face to ensure I don’t look like a zombie but I can find that the traditional bronzer colours can look a bit brown and muddy on me. Enter this bronzer in shade ‘Antigua’. It looks more pinky than brown but once on provides a very natural glow to my skin. Pale skinned friends out there – give this a go, it will change your life!
I don’t like to do too much to my brows as they are already naturally – and sometimes quite alarmingly – shaped in a ‘surprised’ arch. I do like to add a little bit of something to fill them out a little though and this does the trick without looking too heavy. It has a twist function so you don’t need to hunt around for a pencil sharpener, and a handy glow bit on the other end which I use to highlight under my brows for nights out.
I think everyone already knows this and probably has one lurking in the bottom of their make up bag somewhere, and it has rightly deserved its cult status. I mean, a colour that suits everyone, regardless of skin colour or tone. I sometimes stray away from this when I am lured by other pretty products, but always come back to it.
Now this is definitely one I have been using for years. Three eye shadow colours that perfectly complement each other and build to create a gorgeous smokey eye and the brushes needed to do just that = eye palette perfection in my, ahem, eyes. It also comes with a little pat of concealer but sadly I no longer have the tan to pull off the shade it comes with so it goes to waste on me.
This is a more recent find which I came across when looking for something for my wedding – I needed a mascara that had impact but that I wasn’t going to cry off at the alter. Luckily I didn’t cry (you can see more of my wedding here) and this mascara has hung around in my make up bag ever since. It does a brilliant job of separating and lengthening lashes without clumping – in fact when the make up assistant first put it on me we were both a bit like ‘what is this stuff’ it was so good!
So there you have it, my day to day favourite make up items that if I lost my make up bag I would have to go and buy all at once. Finger’s crossed that never happens!
