Visiting the Dolomites, South Tyrol

The beautiful Dolomites

I truly meant to stay at home for my last week of annual leave of the year, I really did,  but then I spotted a picture on Instagram and fell head over heels in love.

The image was that pool overlooking those mountains and one picture was all that I needed to know that I needed to visit, wherever it was!

I was pretty surprised to learn it was in Italy – the Dolomites in South Tyrol in fact and the home of that pool was Miramonti Boutique hotel. I will never get over how beautiful and diverse Italy is!

Luckily, Will was as willing to forgo the week of ‘getting stuff done’ as I was and within 48 hours the hotel, plan and car parking was all booked.

I didn’t really know what to expect as I hadn’t heard much about the Dolomites before, but the approach in to Innsbruck airport was enough to have me falling head over heels. The mountain scenery is nothing but glorious; mountains and valleys as far as the eye can see, speckled with snow right at the top and covered in trees in every autumn shade you can imagine.

The hotel is perched on the side of a mountain looking high over the town of Merano, and near the village that is home to the Haflinger horse (check out the cutie in the pictures below).

The views are simply spectacular – and whilst I know it would be just as gorgeous when it is lush and green in summer or white and snowy in winter (it is a ski hotel in winter) I was ever so happy to be there in the Autumn. The air was crisp, the skies blue and everything felt fresh and rejuvenating. And we really were lucky with the wether – it got better each day we were there.

It is a bit funny, as it is so close to the border of Austria and you can definitely feel the mix of culture. It looks and feels like the French Alps, but you’ll hear German as much as Italian (everyone also speaks fabulous English too). I didn’t know what language to use so ended reeling “Bonjourno-gutenmorgen-hello” and “Grazie-danke-thankyousomuch” on the daily! Schnitzel can be found next to pasta on the menu…and you are required to remove your clothing before entering the sauna…suffice to say, I didn’t go in!

We wanted to come away from this break feeling refreshed so we vowed to treat our bodies well. I almost don’t recognise myself typing this…but, we started each day with a bit of exercise! This is very unusual for me, believe me but I loved it! I did 20-30 minutes of HIIT or yoga and Will did a run before we then headed to breakfast to gorge ourselves without any guilt!

The breakfast was one of the best I have come across. On the healthy side there was a juice machine and fresh fruit and veg to make yourself a morning juice,  overnight oats, fresh fruit,  and every health topping you could think of from chia seeds to bee pollen. Then on the other side of things beautiful flaky pastries, cakes, cheese…you get the idea. All washed down with fresh coffee.

We followed breakfast with a walk – either in the neighbouring forest or after a little exploring in the car; and as someone who grew up in the North Wales mountains but now lives in the city, it was like coming home to be in nature again.

We spent he afternoons relaxing – swimming in that pool, chilling in the jacuzzi and snoozing under the softest blankets in the relaxation room.

The hotel has a saying “Hard to find, harder to forget” and I couldn’t agree more. Three nights later and we came home feeling like new people.  I’ll be dreaming of this place until I can get back there again. I just hope it isn’t too long until I do.

What I wore

I took a huge case full of warm clothes but it was so much warmer than I expected so kept the following on repeat:

M&S beret | Lois Avery Cashmere Scarf | M&S top | Chicwish cardigan
ASOS jeans | Hunter wellies

I also bought this beautiful dress from Reiss and this one for the evenings and I loved them both so much!

I have had my eye on this resort for some time. Your post just reiterated that it needs to stay on my list.
